Elaina Martin runs a tight ship. When she says Westfest’s media launch will run for an hour, she means it. On Friday, Ottawa’s politicians Mayor Jim Watson and MP for Ottawa Centre, Pawl Dewar kept to tight scripts and the allotted few minutes to commend Martin on Ottawa’s very own – homegrown and free music festival – Westfest.

I missed out on the rock era – I was born in the late 80s – but the famous power ballades of the era were songs my dad would occasionally play in the car during long drives. And to be honest, listening to them made me plug in my ipod and listen to Britney.
Walking into the theatre you can feel the humidity from the pools of water that cover the stage. A raindrop waterfall drops from the rafters into a pool that is framed like a eight-foot tall mural above a shallow wading pool below. Actors relax on the spa like stage, some diving into the above pool to entertain audience with a couple flips as they take their seats.

Third Wall Theatre artistic director, James Richardson, is preparing for Third Wall Theatre’s big comeback show. After being on hiatus for a year and a half, Ottawa audiences have been waiting with baited breath for the next show from this award winning company.

Fans of Loreena McKennitt are in luck. The Canadian singer and composer will be performing at the National Arts Centre, Southam Hall on Saturday Dec 1st and Sunday Dec 2nd.
McKennitt took time from her schedule to chat with typeQ about her most recent album, her time on the tour and her love for music.

Alison Bechdel is an online comic book artist and writer whose digital feminist character inspired the infamous Beckdell Test. The test challenges movies to meet three basic requirements that challenge the stereotype of women as merely girlfriends or wives in movies. The requirements are that: a movie has two named female characters, that those characters have a conversation, and that the conversation not be about men.
