Minnesota has become the 12th US state to legalize same sex marriage. On Wednesday 15 May Mark Dayton, the governor of Minnesota, signed the bill at the state capital in St Paul.
“What a day for Minnesota! And what a difference a year and an election can make in our state,” he said.
As the governor put pen to paper, a crowd of 6,000, waving rainbow and American flags, cheered him on despite the sweltering heat.

New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan says the Catholic church’s defense of marriage should not be construed as an attack on gay people.
According to the Guardian, Dolan said when asked about gay marriage, "We want your happiness. You are entitled to friendship. But we also know that God has told us that the way to happiness, – especially when it comes to sexual love – is intended only for a man and woman in marriage, where children can come about naturally.”
Dolan said the church had not done a good job in defending its views on marriage. “We try our darndest to make sure we’re not anti anybody," he said. “Our major challenge is to continue in a credible way to present the eternal concerns to people in a timeless attractive way.”
The Cardinal’s comments came after the U.S. Supreme Court hearings about the legality of California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act.
